“Bringing one click, free Wi-Fi to Starbucks opens up new opportunities for our customers and gives us the backdrop to continue to bring innovation to their in-store experience. We’re finding new ways to bridge the third place coffeehouse environment with the digital space, and look forward to sharing that with our customers.” -Stephen Gillett, Starbucks Executive VP
With 4th of July behind us, Starbucks has given us something else to celebrate besides our country’s independence day. This month the coffee chain giant has begun offering free, unlimited wi-fi access in 6,800 U.S. and 750 Canada stores through AT&T. The access, which emphasizes no need for a customer card, username, password or fee is a marketing strategy Starbucks has employed to compete with other cafes such as McDonald’s Corp. that have been offering free wi-fi for several months now. McDonalds has solidified their position as a successful provider of coffee with their widely popular McCafe line. For cafes and bookstores, the idea is that the longer they can get you to use their free internet, read their books or simply just chat with friends the more likely it is that you will purchase something. read more

McDonalds Reimburses Cadmium-Tainted Shrek Glass Customers 150 150 adminxs

This morning as I was listening to NPR radio I was shocked to hear about the recall of 12 million cadmium tainted Shrek Forever After Glasses from the fast-food giant McDonalds. Unfortunately, back home, sitting in my kitchen cabinet is a Puss in Boots glass (not purchased by me, but I will admit that the Antonio Banderas voiced cat is undoubtedly my favorite character in the film). There is good news, however. McDonalds will be reimbursing consumers of the glass with $3– an extra buck on top of the original sale price of $1.99.

“Sadly in the next 18 minutes…4 Americans will die [because of] the food that they eat.” Jamie Oliver, Food Network’s Naked Chef, spoke at TED’s February Conference in Long Beach, CA.
