It happens to everyone. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it’s certainly annoying and makes just about everyone a little cranky when they land on one.
The “404 Error” page is a perfect example of just how mundane web programming can be. Purely logical, it’s the antithesis of creativity and artistic thinking. However, some designers and programmers have taken it upon themselves to change that. Rather than let an error page exist solely as a means to tell visitors that they now have a reason to be utterly annoyed, certain “404 Error” pages have been turned into design extensions of the websites they’re attached to.
In most cases, humor is the remedy for a page that would otherwise make a visitor sigh and quickly mash the “back” button. Whether an outright attempt at utilizing every inch of creative space available, or a simple gesture to prevent visitors from leaving the site, the result is a page that evokes a chuckle rather than a disgruntled groan.
We think it’s great that more designers out there are taking the dull and unimaginative aspects of web design and turning them into art. Like we say, good web design is everywhere, you just need to look for it.
