This week Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site with over 400 million users, introduced a new series of profiles entitled Community Pages. Reinvigorating its initially informational based university site, Facebook has created more than 6.5 million of these Pages that revolve around subjects such as cooking, cycling and hiking. As a California website design company, Urban Geko is very highly involved with social media because we understand its importance as a platform we can use to communicate with our existing and potential clients. According to TechCrunch, these pages were created as a solution to the overflowing content of fan pages. Fan pages, profiles meant for celebrities, brands and companies eventually included profiles that trickled over into normal topics such as “baseball” or “yoga”; hence the creation of Community Pages. Labeled, “the best collection of knowledge on a topic,” the new set of pages appears to be much like a wikipedia page, but instead of showcasing completely factual information, friends will be able to comment and link their own profiles to the topic.

With the Community Pages still fresh on the social media platform, they noticeably lack the one feature Facebook is known for: the ability to add content. With no wall, users cannot leave comments, upload videos or even photos. Users can simply add the name of the Community Page as a keyword to their own profile or use the new “Like” button on the page. This button was also introduced recently as a replacement for the “Become a Fan” tab that shows up on Fan Pages. User familiarity with this button could possibly raise the probability that they would add a Fan or Community Page to their list of profile links. Facebook says they hope, “this action will feel much more lightweight, and that it will increase the number of connections made across the site.”
